How to Become a Master Gardener

The Chelan County Master Gardener Volunteer Training course includes subjects such as botany, entomology, soils, plant pathology, weed management, and tree fruits. Trainees who complete the course serve the community as home-garden horticulture advisors.

2010 MG Training Goes Online

Have you always wanted to learn more about gardening, meet new people and make a difference in the community? Then now is the right time for you to become a WSU Master Gardener. Widespread access to WSU Master Gardener training has never been more convenient. Whether you live in Bridgeport or Plain, Manson or Palisades you can become a WSU Chelan County Master Gardener. WSU created an excellent online training program, complete with PowerPoints, video clips, hands-on activities, interactive quizzes, and many other resources. This exceptional educational tool will teach you everything you need to know about being a WSU Master Gardener right in the comfort of your own home.

Not familiar with computers, do not have a computer at home, do not worry. We have many current volunteers willing to help you become more comfortable with computers and our North Central Washington Regional Library system has computers with high speed internet access available for you to use free of charge. In addition to the online training, in-class sessions, taught by our local experts, will provide a forum for discussion and questions and answers. These face to face classes will help you understand and apply the information you learn online to being a WSU Master Gardener in Chelan and Douglas Counties. They also will give you a chance to get to know your fellow volunteers. In-class sessions are optional, but highly encouraged.

This thirteen week course is tentatively scheduled to begin on January 12 and run through April 13, 2010. The in-class sessions will be held on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. in the WSU Chelan County Extension office at 400 Washington Street. Some of the subjects are botany, entomology, soils, lawns, plant identification and diagnosis of plant problems. Students who complete the course serve the community as home-garden horticulture advisors.
