Service Projects:
Leavenworth
Fish Hatchery Re-vegetation project: Participants received training and information
regarding the use of native vegetation to remediate damage
to riparian areas and stream banks. As part of the project
participants planted native species on the banks of the Icicle
River and assisted in the development of access for handicapped
visitors.
Leavenworth
Fish Hatchery Interpretive trail project: Participants assisted hatchery staff in
the development of existing trail systems. Special attention
was given to the identification of potential wildlife viewing
areas and the creation of signs or informational stations for
visitations by the public. Work was accomplished to include
these areas as accessible to handicapped visitors. Photos Salmon
Fest Project: The
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services Leavenworth National Fish
Hatchery in collaboration with One Reel Productions of Seattle,
the U.S. Forest Service, Cascade School District, and WSU Cooperative
Extention hosted the "I am Salmon" international
learning project as part of the 2002 Salmon Fest activities.
4-H Forestry Education program participants utilized their
training in field observations, GPS technology, and mapping
to create a series of learning sites on Icicle Creek for visiting
middle school students from Japan, Russia, Alaska, and Washington
State. These students collected data from the learning sites
for the purpose of completing presentations for Salmon Fest
visitors including the construction of a permanent display
at the hatchery. 4-H Forestry Education Program participants
mentored and provided assistance to the visiting international
students for the creation of their displays and presentations.
