4-H Summer Forestry Projects
U.S. Forest Service Projects:
Rainy
Creek Campground Project: Participants assisted in the design and construction
of a campground and trail system on the Little Wenatchee
River. Targeted educational content included environmental
and human impacts on the forest, erosion due to floods
and human interactions, protection of riparian areas,
and management of recreational resources for public
use. Photos
Chiwawa
River Project: The 4-H Forestry Education program agreed to adopt
the Chiwawa River Watershead with a commitment to continue
program activities for a five year period. Participants
completed snag surveys, and evaluated and recorded
stream habitat data for native species including three
endangered fish species, Chinook salmon, Bull trout,
and Steelhead. Participants created a map of the watershead
utilizing GPS technology which assisted the U.S. Forest
Serive in developing both short and long term planning
objectives related to public recreation, wildlife habitats
and the utilization and harvesting of various forest
products. Photos
Wilderness
Ranger Project: All
participants were provided with the opportunity to
engage in a four-day wilderness camping trip. They
learned about wilderness designation including the
importance of maintaining the health of wilderness
lakes, streams, and trails including "No Trace" camping
techniques. The activities included trail maintance,
fire ring removal, and litter clean up. Trip participants
interacted with the general public by teaching them
what they had been taught through their wilderness
leraning experiences. Photos
Amphibian
Research Project: Participants learned about research efforts involving
amphibians living in local lakes and ponds. The activities
included constrution and repairs to pitfall traps used
in annual Fall surveys. Photos
