4-H Summer Forestry Projects WSU "Colockum" Forestry
Research Unit Projects:
Forestry
Education Project: Our program students visit this 11,000
acre university research unit to participate in structured field studies related to forestry,
forest management practices and wildfire ecology. They engage
in several project activities with Washington State University foresters including the identification
of research unit tree species and learning to use tools and technology to measure tree
growth, canopy cover and forest density. Learning activities
also include discussion and evaluation of forest and
tree health, the impact of fire on different tree species
and the importance of recognizing the inter-relationship
that exists between all the various and diverse components
of a healthy forest ecosystem. Participants contribute to
ongoing
university research projects utilizing the information
and skills developed through their training activities. Photos
