Program Evaluation

4-H Eco StewardshipAs part of the Eco Stewardship Program we have a commitment to ongoing quality assurance. To achieve that, an evaluative component is included for all participants through Washington State University. The instrument, utilizing a retrospective pre-test/post-test format, has been tested by Washington State University and proven valid and reliable for evaluation of youth programming. Additional program assessments are conducted and tabulated with school district personnel, resource partners, interns and parents of program participants.

The participant evaluation is designed to measure individual development in the context of certain specific life skills. A total of (23) objectives were identified for measurement within the following identified Life Skills areas.

  1. Decision Making
  2. Wise Use of Resources
  3. Communication
  4. Accepting Differences
  5. Leadership
  6. Useful/Marketable Skills
  7. Self-Responsibility

Significant gains are recorded in all measurable objective areas with over 90% of all participants reporting pre-program to post-program improvement.
In addition to the structured evaluation, participants are asked to respond to several open-ended questions related to what they gained from their involvement in the program. The comments to the right represent a sampling of those responses.

We asked participants what they learned in our program. They said:

"Teamwork, work ethics, responsibilities and friendships"

"The knowledge of trees and the forest, because of this program I now have the ability to name several tree species"

"How to step up into a leadership position when it is needed"

"The job experience and working with and making a good impression on some people I might ask for a job"
"Knowledge about the forest, I also learned about trees and how to use GPS, also I have improved my skills in how to work with others"

Following completion of the summer program, we ask our students if they are willing to donate their time to accomplishing a wide variety of community service tasks and activities including the delivery of PowerPoint presentations about their experiences to schools, community groups and elected officials. They also have the opportunity to assist with educational programs with elementary level students through the Leavenworth Salmon Festival, Kids in the Creek and the Leavenworth Songbird Festival.

It is our intent, that our participants have the opportunity to put their newly learned skills and knowledge to use in the service of their school and community. We believe that this continued follow up contact will help "cement" the learning that takes place over the summer.
